Sybil could tell, from the past few months of having seen Mary and Richard together, how much she disliked him. But it wasn’t Sybil’s duty to get in between them and stop the madness before it could begin. That was for Mary to do.

“You could always say you feel ill,” Sybil suggested half-heartedly.

It was something that Sybil always used when she didn’t want to go somewhere and it usually always worked.

“Oh you know me, I will probably end up going, I was never much for faking ill.”

Mary looked around the room, suddenly it felt small and she felt restless. They had been talking circles around the same subjects. Mary was tired of being selfless and accepting Richard and avoiding Matthew. She was tired of prentending it was better this way. If she talked about it any longer she felt she would break.

“Let’s get out of here Sybil, let’s go do something else.”

Taken aback, Sybil could only watch her sister through suspicious eyes.

“Like what?” she asked cautiously.

If it was up to Mary, the two of them would probably get pissed and then the papz would take loads of pictures that would end up splashed all over magazine covers.

“What have you got in mind, Mary?”

“I didn’t have anything particular in mind, but haven’t you ever just wanted to get away?”

Mary wanted to get away. She was feeling trapped and was tired of the charade of happiness with Richard and being happy for Matthew and Lavina. She wanted some fresh air and a change of scene.

“I just want to take off and get out of this city without any real plans, let’s just go.”

Sybil smiled. She had felt that many times, which was way she chose the lifestyle she did by doing all her charities.

“Mary, as I do charities all around the world,” Sybil said with a smile, “you ought to know I have that feeling. I hate feeling trapped, I hate living in our world. We have people scrutinizing our every step, always there when when of us missteps. I hate it, Mary.”

Sybil smiled then asked, “So you’re going with Richard? I can’t imagine that will be too much fun. But then, I don’t particularly like him. No offense, of course, Mary,” she added quickly.

She hadn’t intended to tell Mary of her dislike of Richard, but somehow, it slipped out. She felt her face turn crimson and began stuttering out apologies.

“I am sorry, Mary,” she said, when she was finally able to pronounce a full sentence. “I don’t know where that came from.”

“I can’t imagine it being much fun either.” Mary said sadly. Sybil liked everyone, if she disliked Richard it was truly a testament of his unpopularity.

“Don’t worry about it, I am glad to know your opinions.” She wished she could more openly discuss her feeling’s about Richard with Sybil, but she couldn’t bring herself to voice them out loud. “To be honest though, I’m trying to find a way not to go.”

Sybil brushed aside her sister’s worry with a wave of her hand and a smile.

“Oh, of course not, Mary,” she said. “I’m not the stupid. No, it’s going to be Tom Bellisus. He asked me about a month ago and I said yes. Are you satisfied now that Tom won’t be showing up?”

(OOC: I have absolutely no idea if that’s how you spell his last name. He was the one that Sybil had gotten the news about his death in episode one of series 2.)

Mary smiled with relief. Sybil had her choice in men. It was no surprise really, she was smart, confident, and beautiful. The surprise was out all the men in the world she would choose Branson. Oh well, it was her life to throw away.

“Better choice for a public fundraiser, I’m so glad that’s not how you plan to break the news to our parents.”

Mary was tempted not to go at all, Richard was such a bore at public events, always trying to get somebody’s story. He really was getting annoying to her, hopefully she could find some way out of it.

Sybil thought for a moment. “Perhaps I can convince her that the two of us should go together instead of with a date. Of course, I’ll have a date, but he’ll have to meet me there. How does that sound?”

She could see in Mary’s eyes how much she disliked the plan, but what was Sybil supposed to do? Edith had been shunned nearly all of her life, and not just by Mary, but by their mother and father, and nearly everyone in society. It was hardly a wonder why Edith was so bitter and cruel at times. This could, she thought, be a turning point for Edith if Evelyn didn’t show his disdain of her.

“That sounds alright, but please tell me you won’t be having Tom be your date? I don’t think that’s the best way to break it to the family.” Mary shuddered to think what would happen if Tom showed up at such a public event (especially without Sybil by his side, but just with the intention of meeting her). She hoped her sister was a little more sensible than that.

Sybil brushed aside her sister’s worry with a wave of her hand and a smile.

Sybil sat in a comfortable silence while Mary sent out a text to Evelyn. She knew Mary wasn’t exactly all for the plan as she was, but she could tell that she did, at least, like it to an extent. And besides, Sybil thought, what would it matter to Mary? She never liked Evelyn as she liked Matthew, so this should be no loss to her. Sybil only wanted her sisters to be happy, just as she was beginning to think she might be with Tom.

Tom, she thought, her mind wandering from the room. She certainly liked the idea of loving him, of him loving her. It was what she always wanted, but the only problem was that she had a job now. She didn’t sit idle and get pictures for parties and any other well publicized outing as the rest of her family did. No, she was more suited to her charities in the the third worlds. Maybe Tom come with her…

A text alert from Mary’s phone brought Sybil back to the room with a gentle bump and she moved eagerly to the edge of her seat.

“Well?”

“He said he doesn’t have a date yet, I’m asking him now about going with Edith.” Mary said as she typed another message.

Mary wasn’t sure why she was helping Edith wth this, she wasn’t happy in love, so why was she helping Edith be so? She sighed, part of growing up was her realization that it didn’t help anything to force others to be miserable just because she was.

Her phone buzzed again, “he says he’ll do it as a favor to me, but he doesn’t sound terribly excited about it. Now how do we get Edith on board?”

Sybil thought for a moment. “Perhaps I can convince her that the two of us should go together instead of with a date. Of course, I’ll have a date, but he’ll have to meet me there. How does that sound?”
